William (Billy) Paynter (born July 13, 1984 in Liverpool) is a professional footballer currently playing for Bradford City, on loan from Southend United.
Paynter was signed from Hull City on August 07, 2006 for a fee of £200,000, although he actually joined the Shrimpers a few days earlier on loan, to enable him to play in their match against Stoke.
Paynter had been signed on loan for Hull City on November 17, 2005 by then manager Peter Taylor from Port Vale, prior to a permanent transfer for an initial fee of £150,000 in the January transfer window. Team-mate Sam Collins also made the switch to the Tigers at the same time.
Paynter's preferred position is striker, but he has also played on the right wing for both City and Vale, as well as for a Football League Under-21 team (selected and managed by Peter Taylor) in a game against an Italian Serie B side, a match which took place at the KC Stadium in February 2006.
Former Hull City manager Brian Horton handed Paynter his Port Vale debut in May 2001. At only 16 years and 294 days old, this made him the youngest Vale player for 20 years, and his debut goal in September 2002 made him their youngest scorer for 24 years. He was voted as their Player of the Season in 2004-05.
Paynter failed to make an impression at Southend in the first half of the 2006/07 season, where a mixture of poor form and a hamstring injury hampered his progress. On the last day of the January transfer window, he was loaned out to Bradford City on a month's loan. Playing in his first game at the Intersonic stadium against Nottingham Forest, he scored the equaliser to make it 2-2.
