While the Binghamton Whalers were generally a successful team, their final season was the worst in the entire history of the AHL, after which they folded. Ironically, the Hartford Whalers moved its affiliation to Springfield the next season, where the seven remaining players from the disastrous 1990 Binghamton season helped the Indians to their seventh and final Calder Cup championship.
The franchise was previously known as:
- Binghamton Dusters (1977-1980)
The franchise became known as:
- Binghamton Rangers (1990-1997)
- Like the parent Hartford Whalers, the Binghamton Whalers played Brass Bonanza after the team scored a goal.
- The Whalers logo was almost identical to the Hartford Whalers logo turned onto its side. The white portion of the Hartford Whalers logo was squared off to create an "H". The white portion of the Binghamton Whalers logo is rounded to create the appearance of two hockey sticks touching a puck.
