The airline was established on 18 February 1988 and started operations on 26 March 1989. It was formed as a subsidiary of Iberia. In late 1999 SEPI (the Spanish state holding company of Iberia) implemented the privatisation of Binter Canarias, but held on to a "golden share", permitting it to authorise any future shareholding deal of more than 25%. The airline was wholly owned by Hesperia Inversiones Aereas, which bought the airline in July 2002. It is owned by Ilsamar Tenerife (49.81%), Ferma Canarias Electrica (10.44%), Agencia Maritma Afroamericana (10.11%), Flapa (10%) and others (19.6%) and has 406 employees[1].
Binter Canarias operates the following services (at August 2006)[citation needed]:
- Domestic scheduled services: Fuerteventura, Lanzarote, Gran Canaria, La Gomera, La Palma, Tenerife and El Hierro.
- International scheduled destinations: Funchal, El Aaiún, Marrakech, Milan (Orio al Serio Airport), Nouakchott (Nouakchott International Airport) and Paris (Charles de Gaulle International Airport).
Binter Canarias agreed to wet-lease a Boeing 737-400 from Futura International Airways to launch new flights from Las Palmas to Bergamo and Paris starting on 23 October 2005 and registered EC-INQ. A Boeing 737-800 had been leased from Futura for the peak summer season[2].
The Binter Canarias fleet consists of the following aircraft (at March 2007) [1] :
- 4 ATR 72-200
- 9 ATR 72-500
