Bond University is a private coeducational university located in Robina, Queensland, Australia. It was the first private university established in Australia.^[1]

Bond University was founded in 1987 by Alan Bond and given its University status by the State of Queensland's Bond University Act 1987. The original joint venture partners, Bond Corp and EIE (International), oversaw the purchase of the land, building of the sandstone clad buildings, and the development of the grounds. The Foundation Committee's concept was to create a university along the lines of the world's leading educational institutions - such as Harvard University and the University of Oxford^{[citation needed]}- offering students a different style of tertiary education in small, personalised classes where they would be taught and mentored by the most highly respected academics and experienced business leaders. The iconic buildings were designed by Arata Isozaki, a renowned Japanese architect.

Teaching on the campus began in May 1989. The university is now a fully independent, not-for-profit institution.

The campus is located at Robina on the Gold Coast, Queensland. It is also bounded by Lake Orr to the east and north. The University originally owned a large parcel of land and what was then undeveloped scrub and swamp land. The University sold off various parcels of land during the 1990s as it faced a number of financial crises. The present 66-hectare site at the heart of the now thriving IT and Communications precinct, Varsity Lakes.

The predominant structure of the campus is a large sandstone arch which functions as an executive office building, bridging the gap between the Humanities and IT Faculties. The arch building was also the location for part of the filming of the movie The Marine staring John Cena.

In May 2006 John Howard opened the new $20 million faculty of Health Sciences and Medicine (though the first intake of students started in May 2005), housing a complete set of lecture theatres, tutorial rooms, specialised clincical rooms and laboratories. As one of the few undergraduate Bachelor of Medicine degrees offered in Australia, Bond's three-semesters-per-year schedule means a medical student studying at the University can graduate in four years and eight months (as opposed to five years at most other universities).

The Bachelor of Medicine degree was designed by Dr Chris Del Mar, the dean of the faculty, and a world-renowned expert in Evidence Based Medicine. The Medicine School now has established relationships with six main hospitals on the Gold Coast.

A Doctor of Physiotherapy program is available from 2007. It is a two-year doctorate program, allowing graduates to be able to register as a physiotherapist upon completion of the course.

Bond University's film department operates under the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, and offers both Undergraduate (2yrs, Bachelor of Film and Television) and Postgraduate (1 yr, Master of Film and Television) degree programs. The Centre for Film, TV and Interactive Media is considered to be one of the highest ranking film schools in the southern hemisphere. Several alumni have been rewarded with numerous awards.

The course has an extremely strong production emphasis (up to 75% of the course can be production-based), an accelerated mode of learning on offer (students can fast track their careers by completing the 24 required courses in just two years of three semesters each), and finds a balance between art and industry (incorporating business aspects of the film and television industry -- such as planning, scheduling, budgeting and marketing).

Simon Hunter, a noted industry screenwriter, is the current head of Bond University's Centre for Film, TV and Interactive Media. He is the only Australian born writer/producer to have an original television series commissioned by the US studios and networks. He has worked under contract for Columbia Tristar studios USA, Columbia Tristar Television Australia, Fox Family Television USA, Fox Studios Australia, Becker Entertainment Australia, the Nine Network Australia, NBC Network USA and Merv Griffin Entertainment USA.

In February 2006 Bond University’s Faculty of Law mooting team confirmed their position as Australian Moot Champions, when they again beat the University of Queensland at the Philip C. Jessup International Law Moot Court Competition in Washington D.C.

The Bond University went on to progress to the final stages of the moot court competition, earning Bond University Law a place in the top 10 international law schools. The Bond Team were knocked out of the competition by Columbia University, who went on to win.

Bond University is small by Australian standards with around 2,800 students, 50% of whom are international students. The current student to teacher ratio is about 10:1, the lowest in Australia and one of the lowest globally. The university operates on a standard three semester timetable each year, with intakes each January, May and September. This accelerated program allows a six semester degree to be completed in two years; an eight semester degree (such as Law) to be completed in two years and eight months.

Bond University offers accommodation to approximately 700 students in its Halls of Residences, Accommodation Centre, Bungalows, and North and South Towers.
