Booknotes

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Booknotes was an American television series on C-SPAN hosted by Brian Lamb from 1989 to 2004; making it the longest running author interview program in US broadcast history. Airing on Sunday evenings, the show's format was "one author, one book, one hour." The show debuted on April 2, 1989, and Lamb's first guest was Zbigniew Brzezinski (Grand Failure). After 801 interviews, the final broadcast aired December 5, 2004. Lamb's guest was Mark Edmundson, author of Why Read?

Approximately 500 of the segments can be viewed online via Real Player, while all 801 transcripts are available online. There is no indication whether the remaining 300 segments will be made available for online viewing.

A guideline for the program was to avoid any duplicate appearances by any one author, thus allowing for over 800 different authors to be interviewed every week over a fifteen-year stretch. One reason given by Mr. Lamb to discontinue the series was the time constraints related to reading an entire book every seven days to allow proper preparation for the taped interviews. He subsequently has inaugurated another weekly C-SPAN interview series called, Q & A, airing Sundays 5pm Pacific Time.

Booknotes segments continue to be re-aired on a C-SPAN companion network, BookTV (aka C-SPAN2) on Saturdays, while C-SPAN3 airs repeat segments every weeknight at 11pm Pacific Time.
