Bowser Jr. (Koopa Jr. in Japan) is a fictional character in Nintendo's Mario universe.

Bowser Jr. is the first child of Bowser after the seven Koopa Kids, bearing the most resemblance to Bowser out of all of them. He is ultimately the main antagonist of both Super Mario Sunshine (in which he made his debut) and New Super Mario Bros., with his father only playing a minor role in each. In Sunshine, he uses an alter ego known as Shadow Mario to frame Mario for vandalizing Isle Delfino using his magical brush made by Professor E. Gadd. He is the eighth Koopaling and son of Bowser; interestingly, he has yet to appear in a game along with his siblings. He has since then appeared in Mario Golf: Toadstool Tour, Mario Kart: Double Dash!!, Mario Power Tennis, and Mario Superstar Baseball, the first of which inexplicably features his alter ego, Shadow Mario, as well. Starting with Mario Superstar Baseball, Bowser Jr. has been portrayed as a left-handed player.

Just like the Koopalings, Bowser Jr.'s mother is never revealed, and even Jr. himself doesn't know who it is. In Super Mario Sunshine, Bowser uses this to his advantage by telling him that his mother is Princess Peach, but he eventually realizes that she probably isn't his mother. However, there are still occasions where Bowser Jr. refers to Peach as "Mama", such as Mario Superstar Baseball.

Bowser Jr. shares many physical similarities with his father, with the main differences being a red ponytail as opposed to Bowser's mane, small black beady eyes, a more rounded snout, and a single sharp tooth visible in his mouth (a la the Bulborbs in the fellow Nintendo franchise Pikmin).

In Super Mario Sunshine, Bowser Jr. was shown as covering his face with a drawing of Mario's distinctive nose and mustache, presumably for his role as Shadow Mario. In future appearances however, this is replaced with a drawing of a set of sharp teeth, which he can wear over his mouth (as it is in Mario Golf: Toadstool Tour, Mario Power Tennis, and the later half of New Super Mario Bros.) but which he can also hang loosely from his neck (as in Mario Kart: Double Dash!! and Mario Superstar Baseball). He only has one small fang at the top of his mouth, and presumably he can use these images of sharp teeth, when needed, to make himself look more menacing, and more like his dad. It doesn't work very well, however.

In Super Mario Sunshine Bowser Jr. utilizes a magic paintbrush (that 'lets his wishes come true'), apparently invented by Professor E. Gadd, to transform into a translucent blue doppelgänger of Mario, known as 'Shadow Mario'. In this form, Bowser Jr. vandalizes Isle Delfino (also using his brush), tricking the native people into believing that Mario himself is to blame. Even after Shadow Mario is revealed to be Bowser Jr., he still appears around the island, creating mayhem wherever he goes. The player must prevent him from stealing the various FLUDD nozzles in Delfino Plaza, as well as a Yoshi egg; in other levels he must simply be chased and squirted in order to retrieve a Shine Sprite.

Bowser Jr. is the kidnapper of Princess Peach in Sunshine and New Super Mario Bros., doubling as the main boss in the latter. In New Super Mario Bros., he awaits Mario at the top of the various Towers in the eight worlds, similar to Boom Boom in Super Mario Bros. 3, and fights alongside Bowser in the final castle of the game. Certain battles depend on how he's wearing his bandana. If it's hanging from his neck, he can charge at Mario and occasionally jumps, but is also vulnerable to getting stomped on. If he's wearing his bandana over his mouth, he would constantly duck into his shell and throw regular Koopa shells at Mario. He can only be stomped on if the shell he throws is thrown back at him. Mario can also easily defeat him with fireballs or a Mega Mushroom if he has the ability.

Bowser Jr. appears in a number of Mario sports games. To name, Mario Superstar Baseball, Mario Kart: Double Dash!!, Mario Power Tennis, Mario Golf: Toadstool Tour, and Mario Hoops 3-on-3. In Mario Kart Double Dash, he is classified as a speedy player, in Mario Power Tennis he is considered "tricky", in Mario Superstar Baseball he is a "Power" player, and in Mario Hoops 3-on-3, he is labeled once again as speedy.

Bowser Jr. is often confused with Baby Bowser, who appears in Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island, Yoshi's Story, Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time, and Yoshi's Island DS. (Indeed, the character model for Baby Bowser in Mario & Luigi: Partners In Time and Yoshi's Island DS is virtually identical to that of Bowser Jr., making it even more confusing for the uninitiated.) Baby Bowser, however, is the infant form of Bowser, rather than a child of his. He is also often confused with the Koopa Kids from the Mario Party series (which were also called Baby Bowsers until Mario Party 4). Additionally, Bowser Jr. is not a younger version of one of the other Koopalings. During the beginning of Super Mario Sunshine, FLUDD shows images of Mario’s previous adventures, including a fight between the plumber and Iggy Koopa. This means that Bowser Jr. cannot be one of the other Koopalings, as Super Mario Sunshine takes place after the Koopalings grew to their current forms, but he is still Bowser's child.

  • According to the Official Mario Power Tennis Website, Bowser Jr. lives at "48 Lava Cul-De-Sac, Magma Manor".
  • Also according to the Official Mario Power Tennis Website, Bowser Jr.'s hobbies are scribbling and stealing cookies from other children at day care.
  • In the Mario series, Bowser Jr. is voiced by Dolores Rogers. Confusingly, Tara Strong's official website lists her being Bowser Jr.'s voice in Super Mario Sunshine, despite her apparent absence from the game's credits.
Spoiler warning: Plot and/or ending details about unlockables follow.
  • Shadow Mario has appeared as an unlockable playable character in the game Mario Golf: Toadstool Tour (Bowser Jr. also appears as a separate unlockable character in that game). It is unknown if this Shadow Mario is a separate character from Bowser Jr., or if he was put in simply for a more varied character roster.
Spoilers end here.
