The British University in Egypt is a university in Egypt. Since 1998, an important ambition set by the British and the Egyptian governments was the formation of a British University in Egypt. Such an institution would produce graduates of UK standards to enter key sectors of the Egyptian economy, particularly in the areas of engineering, computer science, and business studies.

Planning continued and financial support was provided by a group of prominent Egyptian business and public figures, principal amongst whom were Mr. Mohamed Farid Khamis Chairman of Oriental Weavers and Mr. Raed Hashem, Vice-Chairman of MAC Carpets. In November 2004, following a concordat between Tony Blair, British Prime Minister and Egyptian President, Hosni Mubarak, and with strong support from the British Embassy and the British Council, a government decree was issued establishing the British University in Egypt. The first phase of the University campus was already under construction and the University welcomed its first cohort of undergraduate students in September 2005. Development of the campus has progressed rapidly and the next phase of new buildings and facilities was completed in early March 2006. Included in this phase will be a large scale auditorium and state-of-the-art conference facilities, new Library and administration/academic staff buildings and a recreational complex.

The British University in Egypt is located in the area of El Sherouk, one of the new residential and industrial cities in Egypt on the outskirts of Cairo. The University campus covers approximately 40 acres (fedans) of land. The available space within the buildings is 27000 m².

BUE degrees are supported by a group of UK Universities led by Loughborough University. The teaching staff consists of highly qualified British and Egyptian academics experienced in the British system of Higher Education. The BUE aims to provide a vibrant, creative and challenging environment in which to develop the potential of students, Enhanced learning techniques and a broad student experience will be key in ensuring BUE helps to shape Egypt's leaders of tomorrow.

The BUE currently offers three main faculties – Engineering, Computer Science and Business Administration. Pharmacy and, possibly Dentistry are planned to start in September 2006. However, the BUE is not only an educational institution but is also a thriving social and cultural centre, with much to offer students of any age, nationality or social background.

BUE students will enjoy strong links with business partners in both Egypt and the UK, leading to a range of training opportunities, internships and field studies in Egypt and abroad.

The University is rapidly developing an institutional research profile and a significant number of internationally recognised research-active staff have been engaged in academic positions. BUE’s vision is to be regarded as a leading University in Egypt and aspires to be established as a world-class institution within a 10 year period.
