Buea is the capital of the Southwest Province of Cameroon. It lies on the eastern slopes of Mount Cameroon and was the colonial capital city of the German Kamerun from 1901 to 1909, then of the Southern Province of British Cameroons (1949-1961).

Tea growing is an important local industry, especially in Tole.

The city hosts the University of Buea, the only Anglophone university of Cameroon. The city still has a handful of colonial era buildings, notably the palatial former residence of the German governor, Jesko von Puttkamer. There are about 150,000 people in Buea (including Muea; Tole; Miles 17, 16, 15, 14; Bova; and surrounding villages).

It hosts the Nigerian Consulate in English Cameroon and, originally, was constituted mainly of Bakweri people although due to its position as a University Town and the Provincial capital there are a significant number of other ethnic groups including Francophones.

Parts of Buea were swamped by floods in 2005. There was also an attempted prison escape in which a number of inmates were killed. Because of its location at the foot of Mount Cameroon, Buea enjoys a considerably more temperate climate than the rest of the country. Thunderstorms and damp fogs are common, rolling off the mountain into the city below.
