Burscough developed originally as a two small farming villages (Burscough and Burscough Bridge) on a low ridge above the West Lancashire Coastal Plain. With constant development of new housing estates and apartments, Burscough's population has recently rapidly grown and the two communities have long since melded together. At the last census (late 90s) the population stood at 8,391, but it has now soared to well over 10,000.

The A59 and Leeds and Liverpool Canal pass through Burscough. The junction with the Rufford Branch of the Leeds Liverpool Canal is in Burscough. The town has two railway stations: Burscough Junction railway station, on the Liverpool to Preston line and Burscough Bridge railway station, on the Southport to Manchester line, these lines formerly had a junction known as the Burscough curves. The presence of the two stations is a sign of the two previous villages and their differing landowners. There are several primary schools and a science college [Burscough Priory], shops and a large Tesco.

The Windmill Farm Railway is located at the Windmill Animal Farm. The railway operates over a 0.5 mile (to be extended) track at 15 in (381 mm) gauge.

Burscough Football Club play at Victoria Park and are managed by Liam Watson. They have won the FA Trophy when they beat conference side Tamworth in the final at Villa Park and made considerable progress in the 2005 FA Cup competition, beating Gillingham 3-2 before unfortunately being knocked out by Burton Albion one game away from Manchester United.

The club are currently in the middle of a redevelopment plan which would see them move a short distance to a new ground with the development of a sports complex to take some of the strain from the ad-hoc sporting fields and the council-owned sports centre next door. [1]

Martin Mere is a large wildfowl reserve and visitor attraction on the edge of Burscough and is owned by the Wildfowl and Wetlands Trust. In 2006 Martin Mere featured in the BBC television programme Autumnwatch, a nature programme shown every night for two weeks starting from 2006-10-02.

Burscough is in the Liverpool L40 postal area, although a small movement is growing to try and get the town associated with Southport for postcode purposes to disassociate it from the negative connotation of appearing to be "In Liverpool"
