Chastity Claire Babcock, familiarly known as C.C. was a fictional character on the sitcom The Nanny. She was played by actress Lauren Lane.
C.C. was the business partner of Maxwell Sheffield (Charles Shaughnessy) and had been working for him for almost 20 years. She also harbored a crush, that borderlined on absolute obsession, on Maxwell, even after his wife had died and he was still mourning her. One clue that her flirtation was for purely selfish reasons was that she never got the children's names right.
One person who saw her as completely selfish was Niles (Daniel Davis), the Sheffield's butler. He despised her from the first time she came to work with Maxwell, and the feeling was rather mutual. C.C.'s main problem was that her family had been broken (her parents had been divorced) and she felt that she was not attractive at all. In fact, Niles would often make snide comments about how she looked, and often related her to a dog or a man.
When Fran Fine (Fran Drescher) came to work as the new nanny, C.C. felt immediately threatened. Fran was classy, in her own way, and even though she was anything but cultured, she was practical and had common-sense. C.C. always called her "Nanny Fine". In fact, C.C.'s dog, Chester, hated C.C., but loved Fran.
At their party which they were courting financial backers for their new show, C.C. took one look at Fran, descending down the stairs in a beautiful red dress, and she hissed to Maxwell, "Who's that?!" Maxwell's reply? "That's the Nanny!"
As time went on, and Fran and her large family became part of the Sheffield's life, C.C. got more hostile. Her jealousy towards Fran was also borderline hatred. She resented what she thought was Fran intruding on her turf.
However, Fran proved that she could give as good as she got. In one episode, when C.C. purposefully hurt Gracie's (Madeline Zima) feelings and told her that Fran was merely a nanny, causing Gracie to run away to Fran's apartment, Fran told her off. "You're a wonderful woman, and I wish you well, but, if you ever hurt one of my kids again, they'll be wiping your blue blood off the walls!"
When Maxwell and Fran got engaged, this was the final straw for C.C. She plunged into depression, gained weight, went crazy and had to be institutionalized for a few episodes. (This was to cover up the actress' real-life pregnancy.) She eventually accepted it, however, under duress.
But at the wedding, C.C. once again tried to upstage Fran, and she again failed in getting what she wanted. When asked if anyone objected, C.C. didn't say a thing, mainly because Fran's mother, Sylvia (Renee Taylor) shot such a devastating glare at the audience that no one dared say anything. Even after the marriage, C.C. still called the new Mrs. Sheffield, "Nanny Fine", which, by this time, had also started to annoy Maxwell.
During the final season of the show, the feud between Niles and C.C. was replaced by a developing romantic relationship. Niles initially realized his feelings for C.C. and attempted to propose marriage to her many times, only to be rejected and mocked at each attempt. This situation became increasingly uncomfortable, leading to both C.C. and Niles declaring their intentions to terminate their employment with the Sheffield household and Maxwell's business, respectively. However, before Maxwell and Fran were able to talk them out of this decision, Niles and C.C. were found to be sleeping together.
C.C. and Niles married in the series finale as Fran was giving birth to twins. Shortly beforehand, C.C. learned that she was pregnant with Niles' baby, the resultant news caused both of them to faint! During the wedding ceremony, it was revealed that "C.C." stood for "Chastity Claire," which shocked everyone there.
She, along with Niles, accompanied the family to California.
