C31 Adelaide is a community television station broadcasting in Adelaide, South Australia on the Channel 31 frequency since April 2004.
Previous to C31, Adelaide's community television station was run by Adelaide Community and Education Television Inc., or ACE TV (sometimes known as "ACE Channel 6", despite broadcasting on UHF 31). ACE TV held a temporary licence from May 1994[1] until December 2002, when it was cancelled due to breaches of its licence conditions.[2] ACE TV last broadcasted in May 2002.[3]
Some interstate content is shown (such as travel and cooking shows). Programs such as News Hour from Deutsche Welle are regularly shown.
Unlike the community television operators in the other capital cities, who were granted permanent licences in 2004, C31 Adelaide continues to operate on a temporary licence issued by the Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA), currently set to expire on 2007-07-04.[4]
An application process was conducted for the allocation of a permanent community licence in Adelaide in 2004-2005; neither of the two applicants, one of which being C31 Adelaide, were considered suitable. No permanent licence was allocated, and C31's licence was extended from its original 2006-07-04 date.[5] The future of a permanent community licence in Adelaide remains unclear, as ACMA await "further developments in the policy framework for digital television" before deciding whether to advertise the licence.
