Cria Cuervos

Cría Cuervos or simply "Cría" (Spanish for "Raise crows") is a Spanish 1976 film directed by Carlos Saura. The film tells the story of Ana, a young girl in a family of three children, growing up under the Franco regime. Ana, played by Ana Torrent is a young girl who witnesses many horrific things in her life. Her mother, played by Geraldine Chaplin, is cheated on by her husband and dies of a painful illness before the film begins. The father, played by Hector Alterio, is a philandering general in Franco's army, who dies while sleeping with his mistress. The children, along with their grandmother, are sent to live with their mother's sister, Paulina, played by Monica Randall, who tries to be a good guardian and continue her own life as well.
Much of the film takes place in flashbacks and in scenes of Ana's imagination, mostly of her mother. Many believe Cría is an analogy for the Spanish State. The father represents Franco's regime, ignoring traditional values; the mother is the terminally ill old Spain. The grandmother is the face looking into the past, reminiscing about days gone by. Ana and her sisters are the new Spain, marred by violence but perhaps resolute to create something new.
The tagline for Cría is: Cría cuervos y te sacaran los ojos ("Raise crows and they will tear your eyes out")
The film prominently featured the pop song "Porque te vas" by Jeanette.
