Cable box (electronics)

A cable box is a type of set-top box which is provided by some cable television companies that gives the user of the cable television more channels than they would have without the cable box. These devices serve as a way to allow non-cable ready TVs to emulate cable-ready ones, or to allow analog TVs to view digital channels. Such devices also often include decryption hardware to allow access to premium channels.

These devices often have rf outputs for monitors that don't have composite or S-video inputs; however, some cable boxes have composite and s-video outputs for monitors that have no tuner at all, and HDTV boxes add support for DVI or HDMI to connect to digital monitors.
