Caerphilly RFC

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Caerphilly Rugby Football Club is a Welsh rugby union team founded in 1887. Their home ground is Virginia Park in Caerphilly. Their nickname is The Cheesemen. One supporter has been known to shout 'Let the cheese run through your veins' when Caer are not playing that well.

They are playing in the Asda League Division 1 EAST in the 2006-2007 season.

The club was formed in 1887, and have spent many years in the top divisions of Welsh league rugby. Their home ground Virginia Park is a small stadium with all-seated stands on either side of the pitch and a non-seated stand at one end of the pitch. When rain falls during a home game, the regular standing fans tend to chant "We wanna roof! We wanna roof" till the rain (or the game) finishes. As yet they are still waiting for a roof. Caerphilly also featured in two recent cup finals, the Parker Pen Shield European Cup Final 2002 (losing to French team Castres Olympique) & the Welsh Cup Final in 2004 (losing to Neath RFC).

In history, an interesting episode during World War II saw German aircraft bombing Virginia Park, as they believed it was being used as an airfield!
