In 1973, Reeves Callaway was a young Formula Vee racer who could not continue to race due to financial reasons. This was considered a tragedy, as Reeves was being compared against Rick Mears and Emerson Fittipaldi.This financial situation led him to start working as a driving instructor. This allowed Reeves to become familiar with the BMW 3 Series. He obtained one of the BMW 320i school cars with the intention of tuning it for more power. Reeves went on to install a turbocharger to the BMW. It wasn't long after that (via word of mouth and some media articles) that orders started pouring in, giving birth to the Callaway company.
