First Division 2006

The Campeonato Alagoano is divided into Copa Maceió and Copa Alagoas. They both have the same format:

  • First stage: double round-robin, in which all teams play each other home-and-away games.
  • Second stage: home-and-away playoff with the top 4 teams of the first stage (1st place x 4th place, 2nd place x 3rd place).
  • Third stage (if necessary): home-and-away playoff with the winners of the first and second stages.

If a team wins both stages (first and second) it is crowned the champion of that stage. If not, the third stage is disputed, and the winner is the champion of that stage.

If a team wins both Copa Maceió and Copa Alagoas, it is crowned the state champion. If not, a home-and-away playoff with the winners is disputed, and the winner is declared the state champion.

The team last placed in Copa Maceió (first stage) is relegated to the second division and do not participate in Copa Alagoas. Also, CRB does not participate in Copa Alagoas because it will be participating the Brazilian Serie B.

As in any other Brazilian soccer championship, the format can change every year.
