The Cape Verde national football team, nicknamed either Tubarões Azuis (Blue Sharks) or Crioulos (Creoles), is the national team of Cape Verde and is controlled by the Federação Caboverdiana de Futebol. It has never made the World Cup or the African Nations Cup. The team almost qualified for the African Nations Cup in 2006, at one time lying second in their qualifying group behind South Africa

For the first time, on November 2, 2002, it faced a non-African team, Luxembourg, in a friendly, resulting in a scoreless draw.

When the Cape Verde Islands were drawn against Swaziland in the African preliminary qualifying round for the 2006 FIFA World Cup Germany, there was no indication that anything but a Swazi victory would be the result. After all, the Sihlangu were in a considerably better position than the islanders in the FIFA/Coca-Cola World Ranking and Cape Verde had never before won a FIFA World Cup qualifier.

In their only other qualifying competition - for Mexico 1986 - Cape Verde was drawn against Algeria and although they managed a credible goalless draw at home, they lost the return leg 2-0 to go out against The Desert Foxes, who went on to become one of two African representatives at the finals.

Football fans in the former Portuguese colony then had to wait until the qualifying competition for Germany 2006 before the country entered the FIFA World Cup running again. In the first leg match in Mbabane, Cape Verde managed a 1-1 draw that kept up their hopes of a place in the group stage. Their task in the return leg was made simpler by the fact that the Swazis arrived on the island with only 12 players (including two goalkeepers) after six of their players had been left stranded at the airport in Dakar, Senegal. When their visitors ran out of steam in the second half, Cape Verde managed to score three times without reply to book their place in the group stages.

Having already done much better than expected, the group matches were viewed as a bonus for Cape Verde, who managed three wins and a draw to go with their six defeats.
