His father was a Volvo executive who was transferred internationally, so Carl lived in England from ages ten to fourteen and spent his last two high school years in Greensboro, North Carolina in the United States. He has featured in the top fifty of the Official World Golf Rankings.

On June 4 2006, Pettersson won his second PGA Tour title - the Memorial Tournament at Muirfield Village. He finished at twelve under par, two strokes ahead of the field.
