Carlos Edwards (born 24 October 1978 in Diego Martin) is a Trinidadian football player who currently plays as a midfielder for Sunderland.
Edwards started his career at Defence Force in his native Trinidad and Tobago and was later signed by Wrexham in 2000. After five years with Wrexham, and one piece of silverware in the form of the Football League Trophy, Edwards joined Football League Championship side Luton in 2005 on a Bosman .
Since joining Luton he has become popular with the fans with his flair and ability, winning the Young Members Player of the Season award. He has recently been linked with moves to Celtic, West Brom, Norwich and Luton's local rivals Watford.
In 2006, Edwards was called up to the Trinidad and Tobago national football team for the 2006 World Cup in Germany.
In his first match against Sweden in the World Cup, he played brilliantly, shutting down world-class players such as Zlatan Ibrahimović of Juventus. He also played in Trinidad's other two games, against England and Paraguay, receiving acclaim for his overall performances from many observers.
He completed a £1.5 million move to Sunderland on January 2 2007. It was revealed Edwards signed on a three and a half year contract. Roy Keane said he was very happy to get a player of Edwards' calibre at Sunderland. He has started his career at Sunderland with goals against Sheffield Wednesday, Coventry and Birmingham. Carlos was sidelined with a shoulder injury. He returned to the squad to face Wolverhampton F.C. in Sunderlands 2-1 victory recently, his return is to the overwhelming approval of Sunderlands fans, many of whom see his performances as vital if Sunderland are to achieve automatic promotion in the final run-in of the season.
