Carlton is a suburb to the east of the city of Nottingham in the borough of Gedling. It is close to Sneinton, Bakersfield, Mapperley, and St Anns. It is near the River Trent and has an NG4 postcode.

The main shopping street is Carlton Hill, which has several shopping chains, and smaller shops such as newsagents, chemists, and grocers. There is also a fairly large shopping area in Carlton Square, the traditional centre of Carlton (which is currently undergoing redevelopment) and where Carlton Urban District Council was based before Carlton became part of Gedling Borough council in 1974. Before then the area was used by Carlton Central Primary School for almost a hundred years up until the 1960s when, after a piece of masonry fell from the roof into the school assembly area (during the night, fortunately no-one was injured), the school was demolished and rebuilt on Foxhill Road/Carlton Hill, the council house and the current Carlton Square was built in its place.

There is a railway station on the Nottingham to Lincoln line. Local schools are Parkdale School, Carlton-le-Willows School, the Gedling School and the Wheldon School and Sports College (next to the large Carlton Forum leisure centre on Coningswath Road). There is a Tesco on Carlton Hill which was built on top of where the St Paul's primary school stood from around 1880-1983 when it was demolished. The school itself was built next to a graveyard from the 17th Century, which was moved when Tesco was built. Shortly after Tesco was built there were reports of Poltergeist activity in the bakery which was situated over the cemetery but the rector of St Paul's at the time performed an exorcism and there have been no reports since.

House prices in Carlton are on a par with most of Nottingham, ranging from £80,000 to around £250,000.

Its most famous resident was the actor Richard Beckinsale, who was born there in 1947.

Carlton Town Football Club were champions of Northern Counties East Football League Division One in the 2005-2006 season.
