Carpetright plc (LSE: CPR) is one of the largest British retailers of floor coverings. It was founded by Philip Harris, now Lord Harris, a Sunday Times Rich List member and prominent supporter of the Conservative Party, who had founded other businesses previously. It opened its first store in 1988 and now has over 400 in the United Kingdom. It has also expanded into Belgium, the Netherlands and the Republic of Ireland. It floated on the London Stock Exchange in 1993 and in 1999 it bought the Carpetland stores. Since around the turn of the century it has broadened its range of in response to the fashion for wooden and laminate floors. It acquired its first operations in Continental Europe in 2002. Turnover for the 52 weeks to 30 April 2005 was £462 million.
Each Carpetright branch consists of various members of staff which specialise in different parts of the business
Manager Each store has a manager, their job involves running the store and organising the staff, they deal with any problems which may arise and ensure that the shop runs smoothly. Whilst managers can sell it is common practice for managers to direct customers who are asking them for help to salesman. This is because managers receive commission for every sale made anyway and therefore is considered unethical for a manager to receive the sales commission and the commission he will receive as store commission.
Sales Person Staff employed to sell various floorcoverings to consumers, required to have good mathematical skills in order to calculate how much floor covering is needed for stairs and landings as well as basic rooms.
R.S.A. A retail sales assistant, most commonly a female. The job is similar to that of a receptionist. This job includes filing and stock administration as well as dealing with customers and answering the phone.
Estimator A salesperson who has been trained to measure various rooms and stairs, customers whom are unsure about sizes and joins in floorcoverings may consult the estimator who will arrange to travel to their house and correctly measure the areas for the customer.
Warehouse All stock is stored in a warehouse within each store, the warehouse man will allocate stock and store it in appropriate places so that it can be easily accessed. Other jobs include cutting floor carpets and general matinence of the store.
