Carwyn Jones

Carwyn Jones (born 21 March 1967) is the Member of the Welsh Assembly for Bridgend and Minister for Environment, Planning and the Countryside in the Welsh Assembly Government.

He was a pupil at Brynteg Comprehensive School in Bridgend, and then studied at the University of Wales, Aberystwyth. He subsequently trained as a barrister at the Inns of Court School of Law, London.

Before his election to the National Assembly of Wales, he was a practising barrister who specialised in Family, Criminal and Personal Injury law. He was also a professional tutor at Cardiff University Law School. He has also served as a County Borough Councillor for Bridgend.

Carwyn Jones was appointed as Minister in the Welsh Assembly Government in July 2000. His responsibilities in this role include the environment, countryside issues, town and country planning, sustainable development, agriculture and rural development.

Along with a number of other Assembly Members, he is a fluent Welsh speaker.

Mr Jones has the duty to inspect planning applications for open cast mining in Wales. This has lead him to approve one plan in Ffos-y-fran Merthyr Tydfil. However, local capmpaigners went to the the High Court in London where the Judge quashed a Welsh assembly decision backing the plan. [1]. The Assembly Government are to appeal against this desicion [2].
