Central Jersey is the central region of New Jersey. Because of New Jersey's rapid urbanization, sprawl, and population growth over the past half century, the always fuzzy lines between "North Jersey" and "South Jersey" blurred.

The counties of Central Jersey are typically now included as part of North Jersey, and often are not considered to be part of South Jersey, as they have come to more closely resemble New York culturally than Philadelphia. This is likely because the New York metro area is the largest in the country, far larger than the Philadelphia area (Philadelphia is the 4th largest metro in the country), so its influence on New Jersey has been larger than that of Philadelphia. Many Northern New Jerseyans, as well as New York City residents, also have migrated within the past three decades to the Central Jersey counties, ironically to escape urbanization, which has also caused these newly urban counties to generally be more often grouped as Northern Jersey. This leads many North and South Jersey residents to claim that Central Jersey simply does not exist and is part of North Jersey. However, Central Jersey residents will disagree.
An overwhelming portion of Central Jersey is closer to New York City than it is to Philadelphia.
The overwhelming majority of Somerset County, Middlesex County, Monmouth County and Hunterdon County is closer to New York City than it is to Philadelphia. Exceptions include the southwestern portion of Hunterdon County and Middlesex County, the southern tip of Somerset County and the western edge of Monmouth County, all of which are roughly equidistant between both cities.
Parts of Mercer County and Ocean County are sometimes considered part of Central Jersey. Mercer County is closer to Philadelphia than it is to New York City. Except for the northern tip, Ocean County is closer to Philadelphia than it is to New York City.

The following designations may be applied to the remaining counties if Central Jersey is eliminated:
All of Ocean County will most likely merge with South Jersey. Currently, all but the northern tip of Ocean County is considered part of South Jersey.
Mercer County would be difficult to designate because it is currently part of the New York Metropolitan Area, previously part of the Philadelphia Metropolitan Region and also its own Metropolitan Region (Trenton-Ewing).
