The Centrist Party was created on July 4, 2006 as a self-declared response to the stalemate between the Republican Party and Democratic Party in the previous two presidential elections. Founded by John P. Reisman, by design it intends to provide the electorate with a middle ground foundation for Republican and Democratic politicians and voters.

The Centrist Party was registered in 2006 with the Federal Election Commission and says that it is organizing nationally.

In 2004, Morris N. Guller, a member of the Centrist Party, ran for the United States House of Representatives in New York's 20th congressional district, earning 0.5% of the vote (election results).

John P. Reisman worked with James Grier Miller, doing research on educational systems. He also worked with Jonas Salk, on developing the Learning Center/PATH project and EDUCOM (The North American Inter-University Network).

He has worked for the US Department of Homeland Security and in developing energy efficient housing, and management and training systems.

The mission statement for The Centrist Party, taken from their web site, is:

"To achieve common sense solutions that have at their heart, a tone of balance and fairness. To create a strong foundation for mainstream America that is not prone to undue influence from left/right arguments. To move away from character assassinations and toward solution oriented campaigns. To empower people, and the vote, with a strong position not confused by one-sided agendas, or special interests. To formulate policies and solutions that regard short, medium and long term considerations at all levels.
The lack of a centrist party weakens the centrist view. Providing a strong foundation for voters and politicians in the center to express their views is essential. Without it, any attempt at maturing the political environment would likely fall short. In the current political environment, politicians can claim to be centrist and after they are elected meander back to their special interest base in the far left or right, where their funding comes from. The establishment of a centrist foundation significantly strengthens the integrity and ability of politicians to campaign on, and maintain a centrist political view."

The party theme is "Common Sense for America"

"American democracy has suffered because civic engagement has been replaced by consumerism where monetary profit is held above reasonable value exchange by virtue of perceived value. This means that median value, or what a product may reasonably be worth, is over-exaggerated in order to return greater monetary wealth through deceptive practices and market manipulation. Corporations strive to fulfill profit goals that are in a conflict of interest with normative values. The scandals of many of these corporate practices became increasingly manifest going into and beyond the year 2000. Many examples of corporate corruption bubbled to the surface when the illusion of profit was taken away and stockholders suffered the consequences of deception. These practices still occur in subtle ways within the system and are not in line with equitable value exchange in terms of the goods and services delivered to the people, inflationary pressures, and the shareholders in many cases."
