The Charity Commission is the non-ministerial government department that regulates registered charities (and hence to some extent most churches) in England and Wales.
The Charity Commission answers directly to the UK Parliament and not to Government ministers, and as a result it is often described as a quango. The head is the Chief Charity Commissioner, who is assisted by the Chief Executive (currently Andrew Hind). Geraldine Peacock, CBE was Chief Charity Commissioner 2003-2006, and Chairman-designate from 8 July 2004 to 2006. She is succeeded by Suzi Leather, DBE as of 1st August 2006, who steps down from chair of the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority and the School Food Trust.
It has four sites in England and Wales, in London, Taunton, Liverpool and Newport. There are public terminals at each site except Newport for accessing the Commission's web site.
Charities in Scotland are regulated by the Office of the Scottish Charity Regulator and in Northern Ireland are regulated by the Voluntary Activity Unit of the Department of Health and Social Services at Stormont Castle.
