Cherry 2000 is a science fiction cult film made in 1987. The film is about Sam Treadwell's (David Andrews) search for a replacement to his broken 'perfect sex machine', the "Cherry 2000" android, enlisting E. (Edith) Johnson (Melanie Griffith), a tough pathfinding tracker who guides him into the interior of America's post-apocalyptic wasteland. Sam and E. must also fend off the attacks of Lester (Tim Thomerson) and his subordinates, who try to beat them to the android. Pamela Gidley plays the titular role of Cherry 2000.

Contents

Cherry 2000 is probably most widely known for the original score by Basil Poledouris, and the status of the CD as a collectors' item. The soundtrack CD was the first Varèse Sarabande CD Club title. Only 1500 copies were made, and were originally sold by mail-order for US$12. It became a highly valued collectible, one copy selling for $2500, many claiming that to have been the most ever paid for a copy of a film soundtrack. For becoming such a famous collectors' item, the packaging for this edition of the CD was surprisingly very poorly done. The track list had the incorrect length printed for the last two tracks, and two tracks were missing from the track list entirely.

In 2004, Prometheus Records acquired the rights to the score and made it available in a double package with another Poledouris score, that of the film No Man's Land. The Prometheus Records edition features more tracks than the Varèse Sarabande edition, as well as all the tracks being listed and with the correct length.

In the year 2017, business executive Sam Treadwell finds his beloved android wife Cherry 2000 short circuited during a torrid embrace amid the soap suds on his kitchen floor. The Cherry 2000 is outmoded and he cannot find an adequate replacement. Heartbroken, his only recourse is a trip across the treacherous desert wasteland to an abandonded manufacturing plant where he hopes to find another model to house Cherry's memory chip. To make the perilous journey past the wasteland psychopaths, Treadwell enlists the aid of sexy renegade tracker E. (Edith) Johnson. But as he and Johnson are forced on the journey together, a mutual attraction grows, and Treadwell learns the hard way that the perfect woman is made of real flesh and blood.
