The Chess Olympiad is a chess event which has been officially organized by FIDE since 1927 and takes place in even-numbered years. Prior to World War II the event was occasionally held annually. There were also two "unofficial" events (not recognized by FIDE) using the name organized for political reasons in 1936 and 1976.

Although chess is covered in sports sections in many newspapers around the world, it is not included as one of the recognized Olympic sports. However, FIDE is now a member of the International Olympic Committee and adheres to its rules. The prospects of chess becoming an Olympic event at some future date remain unclear.

The 2008 Olympiad is scheduled to be held in Dresden, Germany. The 2010 Olympiad is expected to be held in Khanty-Mansiysk, Russia.

The trophy for winning the men's team is the Hamilton-Russell Cup, which was offered by the english magnate Frederick Hamilton-Russell as a prize for the 1st Olympiad (London 1927). The cup is kept by the winning team until the next event, when it will be consigned to the next winner.
The trophy for the winning women's team is known as the Vera Menchik Cup.
