Chiang Mai University (Thai: มหาวิทยาลัยเชียงใหม่) was the first provincial university established in Thailand and the first to be named after the city it is located in. The university's main campus of 4 kilometers² stands at the foot of Suthep mountain between Huey Kaew road and Suthep Road, in Amphoe Muang, Chiang Mai Province, Thailand, and is about 4 kilometers from downtown Chiangmai. Now a highly respected institute of higher education, the university was founded in June 1964 and began offering its first PhD programs in 1976.^{[citation needed]}

In September 2006, three universities in Thailand were ranked as "Excellent" in both the academic and research by Commission on Higher Education. Those are Chiang Mai University, Chulalongkorn University, and Mahidol University.
