Ryan, a Navy officer and sometimes fling of Phoebe's, is coming to town for two weeks. Phoebe has all sorts of romantic activities planned - a picnic in Central Park, etc. Unfortunately, Ross comes to the coffeehouse with the news that Ben has come down with the chicken pox. Since Phoebe's the only member of the group that's never had the chicken pox, she comes down with the virus. As it turns out Ryan's never had it either, so they spend the next two weeks quarantined in Monica and Rachel's apartment. They try - with little success - not to scratch. At one point, Monica duct-tapes oven mitts to their hands.

Chandler gets Joey a job working as a data processor in his office. Joey invents an entirely new persona - Joseph. While Joey is a fun-loving single guy who sticks by his buddy, Joseph is a brown-noser not afraid to "ruffle feathers" and sell Chandler out. Joseph has an imaginary wife - Karen - and two imaginary daughters - Ashley and Brittany (Ashley copies everything Brittany does). Joseph is driving Chandler nuts, so Chandler invents a character of his own - Chandy - who has an affair with Karen. Joey sees what trouble Joseph is causing and agrees to quit.

Monica worries that she's too obsessive for Richard. When Richard reassures her that he finds her preference for order charming, she then worries that he doesn't have any quirks. To calm her down, Richard invents one - that has to sleep on the side of the bed that faces California - which seems to work.

Rachel reveals to Ross that military uniforms turn her on - so he rents one. Ross trys to romanticaly carry Rachel out of Central Perk, but she keeps having to go back for something. He eventually throws her on the couch, and says, "You know, why don't I just meet you upstairs."
