Chief Minister of Goa

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The chief minister of Goa is the head of government of the state of Goa in India. The holder of this position has the same powers and duties as all other chief ministers in Indian states.

This postion was first held after the late 1963 elections, when Dayanand Bandodkar, a mine-owner, was elected the first chief minister of Goa, by his Maharashtrawadi Gomantak Party which narrowly won the elections, in the first elections after the end of Portuguese rule in 1961.

This position continued after 1987, Goa was separated from the overland territories of Daman and Diu and upgraded from being a Union Territory to being made a State. Chief ministers of Indian states however have more power than those of a Union Territory.

Past chief ministers of Goa are: Dayanand Bandodkar (20-12-1963 to 02-12-1966; 5-4-1967 to 23-03-1972; and 23-03-1972 to 12-08-1973, died in office); Mrs Shashikala Kakodkar (12-08-1973 to 07-06-1977; 07-06-1977 to 27-04-1979); Pratapsingh R. Rane (16-01-1980 to 07-01-1985; 07-01-1985 to 30-05-1987).

After statehood: Pratapsingh Rane (30-05-1987 to 28-11-1989; 09-01-1990 to 27-03-1990); Churchill Alemao (27.03.1990 to 14.04.1990); Luis Proto Barbosa (14.04.1990 to 14.12.1990); Ravi Naik (25.01.1991 to 18.05.1993); Wilfred de Souza (18.05.1993 to 02.04.1994); Ravi S.Naik (02-04-1994 to 08.04.1994); Dr. Wilfred de Souza (08.04.1994 to 16.12.1994); Pratapsingh R. Rane (16.12.1994 to 29.07.1998); Dr. Wilfred de Souza (29.07.1998 to 23.11.1998); Luizinho Faleiro (26.11.1998 to 08.02.1999); Luizinho Faleiro (09.06.1999 to 24.11.1999); Francisco C. Sardinha (24.11.1999 to 23.10.2000); Manohar Parrikar (24.10.2000 to 02-02-2005) and Pratapsingh R. Rane (03-02-2005 to 04-03-2005 and from June 7, 2005 till date).

While some chief ministers of Goa have served for several years, others have served for only a few weeks or months. They have come from several different political parties. The position is currently held by Pratapsing Rane, and has been since June 7, 2005 when the state was let go from President's Rule, as the Central rule by the federal government is termed in India (this is imposed when a state government cannot be formed for whatever reason).

The state has been under President's Rule four times, from 1966 to 1967, from 1979 to 1980, briefly during 1990, and from March 2005 to June 2005.
