The Chief Minister (Manx: Ard-choylargh) is the Executive Member of the Isle of Man's parliament; Tynwald. The Chief Minister is elected by Members of Tynwald after a General Election for a term in office of five years. The incumbent is eligible to stand again at the end of their term (if they are still a Member of Tynwald). The post of Chief Minister was introduced in December 1986. Prior to that the Head of Government was the Chairman of the Executive Council.

A new Chief Minister was elected following the General Election in November 2006. Candidates for election to the House of Keys did not have to declare that they intend to stand for post of Chief Minister prior to the General Election. John Shimmin MHK announced at the end of July that if he re-elected he would stand for the post. When nominations for the post closed on Monday 25 November, the candidates were John Shimmin, Health Minister Steve Rodan and former Treasury Minister David Cannan. All were unsuccessful in the first round of voting, each failing to receive the requisite support of 16 Tynwald members. House of Keys Speaker Tony Brown was the only candidate for the second round held on 14th December. He was elected Chief Minister unopposed with 27 votes.
