Torano Cigars

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Established in Cuba in 1916, the Toraño family is a cigar manufacturer. In 1916 Don Santiago Toraño emigrated from Spain to Cuba. Over the next 50 years Don Santiago and his son Carlos Toraño Sr. became one of the largest and most prominent growers of tobacco in Cuba.

With the Cuban revolution in 1959, the government nationalized the 17 farms that the Toraños owned and operated. The Toraños left Cuba in the Exodus that followed the revolution. Bringing with him the Cuban tobacco seed Piloto Cubano, Carlos Toraño Sr. is credited today for introducing the seed to the Dominican Republic and educating the local Dominican farmers on growing, production and fermentation. Since then, the Toraño family has expanded to regions in Mexico, Nicaragua, Ecuador, Honduras and the Dominican Republic.

The Toraño family has had an extensive history with the management of tobacco fields and production of premium hand-made cigars. In 1997 Toraño formed a partnership with Fidel Olivas in Danli, Honduras opening the first Toraño owned manufacturing facility followed by a second location later that year in Esteli, Nicaragua.

Today Toraño Cigars is based in Miami, Florida and operates cigar factories in Esteli and Ocotal, Nicaragua as well as Danli, Honduras.
