The Citizens – Party of the Citizenry (Ciutadans – Partit de la Ciutadania in Catalan, in Spanish Ciudadanos – Partido de la Ciudadanía; short acronym C's) is a Spanish political party which describes itself as Centre-Left and Non-Nationalist. A summary of the party's ideology (in Spanish) can be found here: http://www.ciutadans-ciudadanos.net/congreso/IDEARIO_A4.pdf ".
It is led by Albert Rivera, a 27 year old lawyer.
"Ciutadans" was formed in Catalonia in July 2006 in response to the introduction of new laws that discriminate against the spanish-speaking community and prohibits the use of Spanish in all public schools in Catalonia. It is dedicated "to contributing fresh ideas, to impel new policies and to restore a sense of reality to Catalan and Spanish political policy after years of Basque and Catalan ultra-nationalism". In its short existence and against all expectation it managed to obtain three deputies in the Catalan Parliament Parliament of Catalonia with 3.04% of the vote.
The vast majority of Ciutadans' affiliated members are ex-socialist party members or ex-socialist voters and its electoral support is strongest (up to 7%) in the mainly spanish-speaking working-class suburbs of Barcelona. Despite this or because of this, the Socialist-controlled newspaper, 'El Periodico', and the majority of the Catalan media and political analysts have repeatedly tried to portray Ciutadans as a Right-wing ultra-nationalist and anti-catalan party.
Although the party was created in Catalonia as "a response to Catalan nationalism", additional branches have sprung out in the rest of Spain.
