He lettered in three sports while playing at Robert E. Lee High School in Baytown. After being recruited by a number of colleges and universities Stoerner chose to play football for the University of Arkansas Razorbacks. It was there that he was mentored by Razorback and NFL legend Joe Ferguson. Stoerner would later break Ferguson's school records for passing yards, touchdowns, and total offensive yards.

Stoerner was not drafted out of college but signed as a free agent with the Dallas Cowboys. He played in 5 NFL seasons; 4 with the Cowboys (2000-2003), where he was the starter for two games in 2001. He played one season with the Miami Dolphins (2004), but did not see the field. He also played two seasons in NFL Europe, for the Scottish Claymores in 2001 and the Amsterdam Admirals in 2004.

After finding only limited success in the NFL he moved to the Arena Football League. Stoerner spent a season with the Dallas Desperados (2005) before moving to Nashville beginning his career with the Kats.

Stoerner is active in charity work in Arkansas, Texas and Tennessee focusing primarily on charities providing help to children with Down Syndrome. He also devotes time every year helping children develop their football skills at several camps including the Clint Stoerner Football Camp held every summer in Fayetteville, Arkansas and Little Rock, Arkansas. He is the son of Linda Stoerner.
