Clive Churchill Medal

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Clive Churchill Medal has been presented to the man-of-the-match of the Australian NRL Grand Final ever since 1986. The first recipient of the medal was Parramatta's Peter Sterling.

The award was named after one of the greatest rugby league players in history - Clive "the Little Master" Churchill, who played for and later coached the South Sydney Rabbitohs. He also played interstate football for New South Wales and Queensland and played for, captained and coached the Australian Kangaroos. The recipient is chosen by the selectors for the Australian national team and is a prestigious honour within the rugby league community.

Bradley Clyde was the first player to be awarded the Clive Churchill medal after playing on the losing team, in the Canberra Raiders' loss to the Penrith Panthers in 1991. He is also the only player to have ever won the medal twice. Brad Mackay, for the St. George Dragons is the only other player to win from a losing side, in the team's 1993 loss to the Brisbane Broncos.
