Cody attended Degan Elementary School in Lewisville, Texas, where he was raised to go to School, followed by Huffines Middle School, then Lewisville High School. Linley's parents have been divorced since he was one. His mother, Cathy Martin, is an acting coach and his father, Lee Linley is a hair dresser and miniature golf enthusiast. Linley has four brothers - one biological brother, Chad, and three step-brothers named Ben, Scotty and Jason.

Linley made his acting debut in the 1998 made-for-television film, Still Holding On: The Legend of Cadillac Jack. He subsequently had supporting parts in three films released in 2000: My Dog Skip, Where the Heart Is and Miss Congeniality. In 2003, Linley had a major role in the independent film When Zachary Beaver Came to Town and appeared in the big-budget Cheaper by the Dozen.

While in the 5th grade, attending Degan Elementary School, he auditioned for the role of Harry Potter, the news reached the school and the staff was sad that he didn't receive a role in the film.

More recently, Linley appeared on Disney Channel in Hannah Montana as Jake Ryan, a teen actor which he had to leave after the episode People Who Use People (it is rumored he may return in the second season of the show) and in That's So Raven in the episode, Five-Finger Discount.

Linley appeared during the world premiere of The Cheetah Girls 2, while conversing alongside hit Disney Channel celebrity, Brenda Song, opening the film with their comments. When Brenda introduced him, she said "Hannah Montana Star" which arose rumors that he may receive a permanent/main role on the show.

In the children's film Hoot, which opened on May 5, 2006, Linley played Mullet Fingers and co-starred with Logan Lerman and Brie Larson, three young people who try to save a local population of endangered owls from a disturbing threat in Florida. The movie is an adaptation of the children's book by Carl Hiaasen.

He is in Pittsburg filming The Haunting Hour Volume One: Don't Think About It with Emily Osment from Hannah Montana.[citation needed]
