The Coldwater River flows into the city from the south, originating from Coldwater Lake. The Coldwater chain of lakes also has an outlet called the Sauk River, which flows from its north end (near Quincy) and then through the south side of the city of Coldwater. Both combine to form a series of shallow, connected lakes on the city's west side.

US 12 is a surface route less important than it once was as the most direct route between Detroit and Chicago since the opening of the Indiana Toll Road (15 miles to the south on Interstate 69) and Interstate 94. MI-86 also leads into Coldwater.

Coldwater has an east-west railroad, but this is practically a relic of one that led to Chicago and Toledo, Ohio. It has an airport on the west side of town, but this airport has no scheduled flights.

Aside from the usual public and parochial schools, Coldwater has a branches of Kellogg Community College and Baker College.
