The school is known for its strong athletic programs having won 18 Southern Section titles and over 100 league titles in various sports. During the 1970s the school's basketball program was so strong it would often schedule games all through out California with their games drawing up to 3,000 fans. Montclair Prep has also scheduled games against public schools with bigger enrollments as well in football and baseball.
During the early and late 1990s the school has been investigated in several recruiting scandals and fired several of its high profile coaches.
In 1991, the school was suspended from CIF Southern Section postseason play in football for three years and all other sports for one year for falsifying living arrangements, grade tampering and using undue influence. The penalty was later reduced to one year after one of the principal accusers, James Sparks, recanted his testimony.[1]
Dr. Simpson has also himself at the center of controversy as well. In 2003, football coach George Giannini and basketball coach Tyrone Fuller were forced to resign after the CIF Southern Section banned the school from all postseason play in 2003-04. The charges stemmed from an incident where Simpson threatened to expel a baseball player if he didn't also play for the football team. Giannini was never sanctioned and was rehired the following year.[2]
