Families

The bird order Columbiformes the includes the very widespread and successful doves and pigeons, classified in the family Columbidae, and the extinct Dodo and Rodrigues Solitaire, commonly classified in the family Raphidae.

The Pteroclidae (sandgrouse), formerly included in this order, are now treated separately in the order Pteroclidiformes.

Osteology and DNA sequence analyses (Shapiro et al. 2002) indicate that the the Dodo and Rodrigues Solitaire are better considered as a subfamily Raphinae in the Columbidae pending availability of further information.
