  • Commission Junction was Founded in 1998 and is based in Santa Barbara, California[3]
  • 2001 publishes the performance metrics of all advertisers, publishers, and ads within their Network[4]
  • December 2002, CJ abolishes individual tracking links per product and redesigned their product catalog system[5]
  • The company was acquired by ValueClick in October 2003[6]
  • CJ's Link Management Initiative (LMI) introduced in June 2006 was reversed 1 month after its introduction due to protests by publishers and advertisers[7]
  • Commission Junction has today offices around the world[8]

The former competitor BeFree is also owned by ValueClick. BeFree was purchased by ValueClick[9] before Commission Junction. Only after the acquisition of Commission Junction[6] did ValueClick slowly dissolve the BeFree Network. Contracts with current BeFree merchants are not being renewed and no new merchants are accepted as BeFree customers. Once the contract with BeFree expires, merchants will have the choice to either migrate to the Commission Junction platform or look elsewhere for an alternative provider.

This process began around 2003-2004 and picked up speed towards the end of 2005. It is not certain yet when the BeFree platform is going to be shut down forever.
