Coquelles

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Coquelles is a village and commune of the Pas-de-Calais département, located near Calais in northern France.

It is known informally as "la ville du tunnel sous la manche" (the town of the Channel Tunnel) and comprises a shopping centre (Cité Europe), a centre hotellier with an Ibis, an Etap and a Suitehotel, a farm in vieille Coquelles (old Coquelles), part of the L'Européene autoroute (A16) and the Channel Tunnel terminal. A short distance away, near to the modern settlement, but also within sight of the older centre of Vieux Coquelles, with the ruins of its church tower, is a Holiday Inn. Opposite this is the Old Mill, from which the hotel restaurant "Le Vieux Moulin" takes its name.

This is a large shopping centre popular with day trippers or "booze cruisers" (British slang) due to the cheap alcohol in the Carrefour hypermarket as well as the Tesco wine shop. It also has a cinema, a food court with several "English" pubs, as well as a McDonald's and a flunch (self-service restaurant).
