Cornell Savoyards
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Cornell Savoyards is a performing arts association loosely affiliated with Cornell University in Ithaca, New York. Since 1953 it has focused on producing the light operas of W.S. Gilbert and Sir Arthur Sullivan and has produced every work they wrote together (except the lost Thespis). It draws on the greater Cornell community for its membership, including Cornell students, faculty, and staff; Ithaca College students; and Ithaca residents.
The Cornell Savoyards have produced works in collaboration with The Firehouse Theatre, the Binghamton Summer Savoyards, Cornell University's Media Services Education Center, and the Cornell Dramatic Club.
In May 2002, the Cornell Savoyards made its national television debut when excerpts from the fall 2000 stage production of Patience were shown on PBS as part of Commanding Heights, a documentary on globalization. The Cornell Savoyards were also featured in a video production of Princess Ida at Cornell co-produced in 1989-90 by the Cornell Savoyards and Cornell University's Media Services Educational Television Center. This video has aired regionally on PBS affiliates.
The Cornell Savoyards is a registered New York State charity.
