Croyde

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Croyde is a village in the north-west of Devon south of Woolacombe and near the town of Braunton.

Best known as a holiday destination, Croyde Bay is also a centre for surfing. It is home to several small campsites, a beautifully preserved village, and a large holiday park.

It is an excellent base for walking with the South West Coast Path giving access to the spectacular Baggy Point along with the rest of the North Devon coast.

In the village itself there are several attractions that appeal especially to tourists.

There is a traditional ice-cream shop, which offers hand-made ice-cream in a variety of flavours, a Cornish bakery, and a fossil museum.

There are also a large variety of bars, pubs and eateries.

The beach at Croyde is likely the reason that is such a popular holiday destination. Although perfect for surfing, it is strictly life-guarded, with safe zones for swimmers.

Some people would say that the breaks at Croyde are only suitable for experts, and not advisable for beginners. This is due to powerful "dumping" waves, strong rips and fast changing conditions.

It is said that Saunton Sands beach to the south of Croyde bay is much more suited to beginning and intermediate surfers.

The waves at Croyde often break close to shore creating strong outward and side-sweeping currents, which can bring bathers in close proximity to surfers and their surfboards, which generally have pointed noses!

It would be wise to remember that the ocean is a powerful force with no regard for your safety!

The beach and ocean at Croyde Bay are wonderful, and everyone can enjoy them, but please enjoy them responsibly.
