Dalry, Edinburgh

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Dalry is a suburb of the Scottish capital Edinburgh. It is generally considered to be the area between Haymarket and Gorgie, in fact the phrase Gorgie-Dalry is commonly used by the council. It also borders Ardmillan.

The centre of the area may be said to be Dalry Road.

The name is believed to derive from Dail Ruigh, Scottish Gaelic for the "Meadow Slope", which is probably the area now occupied by the cemetery. The east end of Dalry has seen major development, but a large area at Haymarket – formerly railway land – has been empty and partly used as a car park for a number of years. A plan is underway (as of 2006) to build a large office and retail development there, and this has been controversial since small retail businesses in the area are already in decline. The area has seen various developments over the past few years including the construction of a major housing development, Caledonian Village.
