Daltonganj[ now renamed as "Medininagar"] is the headquarters of Palamu commissionery in the state of Jharkhand in India. Three districts namely Palamau, Garhwa and Latehar come under this commissionery.

As of 2001 India census^GRIndia, Daltonganj had a population of 71,307. Males constitute 53% of the population and females 47%. Daltonganj has an average literacy rate of 76%, higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 81% and, female literacy is 70%. In Daltonganj, 13% of the population is under 6 years of age.

Situated on the banks of the river North Koel, the town is named after Col Dalton, a commissioner of Chota nagpur during the British raj. It is 1036 km south east of New Delhi and is accessible by train from Patna, Ranchi, Calcutta, Delhi, Jammu, Bhopal and Gaya. The nearest airport is at Ranchi (165 km). Daltonganj is well connected with Ranchi, Patna and Gaya by road. Trains from Delhi are three- Jharkhand Swarnjayanti Express via Kanpur, Allahabad, Renukut;Tata Jammutavi Express via Kanpur, Allahabad and Renukut;RAJDHANI EXPRESS has it's stoppage at Daltonganj which is a weekly , the Ranchi-Rajdhani express. Shaktipunj express is from Calcutta....Palamau express for Patna from Daltonganj

Apart from GLA College, Woman's College, BN college and Janta Shivratri College. Daltonganj has good schools for Boys and Girls like Sacred heart school which is a convent school,M.K.D.A.V Public School, St.Mary's School, Heritage,GGPS,Bright Land, Gyan Niketan, GLA High School, Saraswati Shishu Mandir, Palamau Zila School, Brahmin High School, Girivar High School, BCC Mission Girls School, Sarvodaya Vidyalay, Rotary School etc. However, in the field of higher education, Daltonganj is inappropriate due to its backwardness in this field.Daltonganj has an array of good professors and intellectuals. Professors like Sri Vidhan Chand and Dr. Razi Ahmed are among the few famous ones.The establishment of Engineering College in daltonganj by DAV group will certainly improve its position in educational field. It has been said that first session of this college will start from this year only. Also, there is a hope of establishment of Nilamber-Pitamber University.

There are few libraries such as Marwari Library, District Library, Urdu Library etc in Daltonganj.

There are a large number of hospitals and nursing homes in which best of the medical facilities are provided such as Sadar Hospital, Seva Sadan, Surya clinic, Bhagwati Hospital(Under construction). Red Cross Society has established blood bank recently.Dr (mrs.) Urmila Shrivastava is the leading Gynaecologist here. Other Gynaecolgists are Dr. (mrs) M. Sharma; Dr (mrs) Meera Jha ; Dr(mrs) Poonam Sinha ;Dr (mrs) Shail Sinha ; Dr (mrs) S S Horo etc. homeopathy treatment is quite recognised there this had been done with the cooperation of few well known doctors of that place to name few they are Dr.Anirudh giri,Dr vishwakarama and few more .....they had been providing the treatment with there enhanced knowledge and long experience of treatment of various diseases...

There are many good restaurants available . To name a few they are Madhuban ,Tripti , Khan e Khas , Moti mistan ,Mansarower ,Kinara , Baba atpate maharaj ki litti ,Manohara kI chaat , Manoj ka chicken chilly,Madhu muskan , Archana sweets , Chitwan . Talking of the bars and pubs there are quite a few available. Oasis beer bar and Dolphin beer bar are located close to each other in the outskirts of the city.Alcohol is costly because of the tax structure.

       The latest sensation though, has been the opening of a beautiful restaurant and an ice-cream parlour-cum-cafe that face each other within the premises of Mahindra Arcade.The place is developing and people are willing to spend money.

The famous Betla National Park, known for its wild life is located nearby.Betla national park is specially known for Tigers. It has a very rich wildlife. Tourists from all over india come to visit Betla.

Netarhat is also famous for sunrise and sunset views.It stands on the plateau of Chhotanagpur.That's why it is also known as 'Queen Of Chhotanagpur' The famous 'Netarhat Residential school' is situated nearby. There many places in netarhat which get success in making place in the tourists' memory like Lagnolia Point(0km from netarhat), Upper Ghaghari Water Fall(4kms from Netarhat), Lower Ghaghri Water Fall (10 kms from Netarhat), Koel View Point (3kms. from Netarhat), Lodh Fall (60kms. from Netarhat) and Radani Fall (35kms. from Netarhat).

From political point of view Daltonganj holds a very important place. "Lok Sabha Upchunav" took place on 29th of March 2007. Ghurana ram of(RJD) won the election by 23000 votes ...

Daltonganj is known for its cultural diversity. The area is well isolated from the communal society and the people living here are more prone to brotherhood. People in Daltonganj celebrate all the festivals with utmost devotion. The main festivals that are celebrated here are:

Although Daltonganj is one of the neglected areas after independence but no one can ignore its importance in the national freedom struggle. There were many freedom fighters from Palamu but among them most important are Nilamber and Pitamber who were killed by the English due to their active participation in Indian freedom struggle.

Naxalism is the most important problem of palamu which is constantly decreasing the speed of development. Poverty, illiteracy, and unemployment are some of the other major problems of Palamu.

There are many hotels running in Datonganj such as Hotel Jyotilok,Hotel koyal, Hotel Jayshree, hotel Amrit etc. with good facilities.

People of Palamau are not very conscious about internet that's why there is a lack of good cafe. There was only one working cyber cafe- 'Net Cafe' (main market)with dial up connection. Recently two more cafe have been opened- kiran cyber Cafe( Bye pass Road)with ISDN and 'Cyber World' with Dial up connection (near Zila School). However one week before, BSNL has launched its broadband services . It's hoped that now the problem of good cafe will be solved.
