Darkwind is an independently developed 3D Turn Based Racing and Vehicle Combat MMO for Windows and Mac OS X (a Linux client is also planned). It is inspired by the board game Car Wars and the Mad Max movies, but set in its own original universe.

It is currently in a closed beta while new gameplay features are being added, but the basic racing and arena combat portions of the game drew a small but dedicated fanbase during earlier public testing.

Contents

Racing, deathracing (races with guns), and combat leagues running over 12 week periods; Real-world timescale for travel, health, vehicle maintenance; Detailed systems dynamic economic simulation; Perma-death, psionic abilities, performance-enhancing drugs.

A number of turn-based racing games already exist (including some excellent board games). Darkwind is the only one we know of that combines accurate physics with turn-based play. Essentially, the race becomes purely about the tactics of entering and exiting corners, overtaking, and generally breaking down the nuances of driving that become automated in a traditional driving game. After all, real world professional racing is much more to do with tactics than reactions - just watch an F1 or Nascar race on TV. By having the game turn based, players can all race more professionally, letting them battle it out tactically rather just seeing who's first to make some dumb mistake, which is what happens in most computer racing games.

Another major reason for Darkwind being turn-based is to allow highly detailed rules and strategy: these things are not possible in real-time games. Players need time to assign orders to their characters and vehicles. It's a totally different experience to standard real-time car games. Think of it as a massively-multiplayer boardgame: you have time to chat, you have time to smack-talk, you have time to watch each other's moves as well as your own. You win by having good strategy and tactics, not by having the best reactions. A MMO wargame rather than an MMORPG.

The soundtrack to Darkwind: War on Wheels uses tracks written by Dean Garcia of the band Curve.
