Daryl Murphy (born March 15, 1983, in Waterford, Ireland) is an Irish football (soccer) player who is currently playing for Sunderland as a forward. He had a largely disappointing loan spell at Sheffield Wednesday last season where he failed to score a single goal and looked to be out of his depth before he was recalled by Sunderland. The 22-year-old Irishman signed a two-year contract at the Stadium of Light after completing a £100,000 transfer from Irish side Waterford United in 2005. Murphy won the League of Ireland Young Player of the Year award in 2005. He scored his first Premier League goal on Sunday 12 February after coming off the bench at home to Tottenham Hotspur, equalising with minutes to go. A strong pre-season performance earns him a no.11 in 2006.
Daryl has scored 6 goals this season in the Coca-Cola championship. One on the opening day of the season against Coventry and another on August the 12th against Plymouth. despite Daryl's goals Sunderland lost both games. Daryl scored his third goal of the season in the Black Cats' 2-1 away win over QPR on November 28, and then notched in successive games against Norwich City and Luton Town. His latest goal came crucially in the last few minutes of a match against Stoke City, drawing Sunderland level 2-2.
Daryl Murphy won his first call up to Ireland National squad due to the absence of Robbie Keane due to injury, but was a unused substitute.
