A datapath is hardware that performs data processing operations. It is one of two types of modules used to represent a digital system, the other being a control unit.

A digital system is a sequential circuit with combinational logic. Sequential circuits can be specified by means of state tables, however, in a large digital system the number of states is too prohibitively large to display with a state table. Consequently a modular approach is used, where two types of modules are used to represent the digital system: a datapath module and a control unit module.
