He began his broadcasting career in 1981 on pirate station Radio Jackie, in South London, whilst he was still at school. He then worked behind the scenes at BBC Radio London, where he later took on a late-night show, playing all of the latest club tunes. He was then one of the original presenters on BBC GLR in 1988, presenting their weekday evening show, which focused on dance, acid-house & rap. In 1991, Pearce joined London's Kiss 100, alongside Gordon Mac. They first presented the drivetime show, before later taking over the breakfast show from Craig Charles.

Pearce joined BBC Radio 1 in April 1995, taking over the weekday early-breakfast show from Bruno Brookes. He took over the weekend mid-morning slot in October the same year. February 1997 saw Pearce taking over weekend breakfast and on October 13th the same year, he went onto present the drivetime show from Kevin Greening, who had taken over Breakfast, alongside Zoe Ball. In addition to drivetime, Pearce took over the Dance Anthems show on Sunday evenings. In October 1998 Chris Moyles took over the drivetime show and Pearce began presenting a Monday - Thursday evening show from 6-8pm entitled The Late Drive. This show was axed in 2004.

Pearce continues to present a show called Dance Anthems, every Sunday evening from 7-9pm on Radio 1. In addition to this, he tours the country as a club DJ and mixes dance compilations. Pearce is also famously known for having his head covered in public at all times, in similar fashion to The Edge of U2 and for being the founder and creator of the NuLife record label.
