David Alexander Edwards (born 3 February 1986 in Shrewsbury) is a Welsh footballer who currently plays for English League One club Luton Town. He is a midfielder and was signed from Shrewsbury Town in June 2007.
He started as an apprentice at his local club, Shrewsbury Town, and made his league début as Town, already relegated, said farewell to the Football League in the last match of the 2002-03 season. He came on for fellow Welshman Jamie Tolley as a late substitute but failed to improve the scoreline, as Shrewsbury lost 2-1 to Scunthorpe United.
In the Football Conference in the next season, he did not play a large role in Shrewsbury's promotion-winning campaign, waiting until 17 January 2004 for his first starting appearance, in the 0-0 draw with Accrington Stanley.
With Shrewsbury back in the Football League, and having matured as a player, Edwards was considered one of Shrewsbury's key players, and was named in the Welsh under-21 squad for the friendly match against Northern Ireland on 28 February 2006 but missed the match through injury; Wales preferring that he was fit enough for club duty before being risked for the international match.
Injury struck Edwards again on April 15, 2006 when he suffered an ankle injury which was expected to end his season, but he came back to play in the season finale on May 6, 2006. Return to club action gave Wales U21 boss Brian Flynn confidence in his fitness, and Edwards was at last given a chance to début in Port Talbot against Cyprus on May 16, 2006, where he performed well enough to merit a recall.
Edwards was named in the 26-man Wales squad to face the Republic of Ireland and San Marino in Euro 2008 qualifying matches in March 2007. However, Edwards did not take part in either of the matches and has yet to make a senior début for his country.
Towards the end of the 2006-07, Edwards was the subject of some transfer speculation, after rejecting an offered extension to his Shrewsbury contract. On June 26, 2007, Edwards signed for Luton Town on a 3 year deal. As he is under 24, Shrewsbury commanded a compensation fee to cover his youth development. The eventual fee was agreed at a tribunal, but clubs have reported differing figures; Luton claiming it was £250,000 [1], with Shrewsbury reporting £250,000 as the initial payment, plus a further £150,000 based on appearances. [2] [3]
Edwards netted his first goal for Luton in a 2-1 defeat at Swindon Town on August 18, 2007.
